Dermatitis is the technical term for inflammation of the skin. It is an inflammation that results from the external contact with an irritant and has two classifications. Poison ivy is a classic example of allergic contact dermatitis while the direct inflammatory effect on the skin of such agents as chemicals, dusts, or excessive sun and wind is called primary irritant dermatitis. Allergic skin reaction to certain medicines taken internally or by injection is another form of the disorder. If it is severe, it is called exfoliative dermatitis. Here are ways by which you can treat dermatitis:

How to Treat Dermatitis

How to Treat Dermatitis

Tip #1: Treatment will depend on the type of dermatitis you have.

Milder forms of dermatitis are usually treated with salves or ointments to dry up blisters and topical anesthetics to relieve discomfort. In case of severe poison ivy or other acute responses, corticosteroid medicines may be prescribed, both for internal use and external application and antibiotics for any secondary infection. Acute symptoms may also require treatment with antihistamines and tranquilizers.

Tip #2:  Hot or cold compress.

It had been medically established that using hot or cold compress on dermatitis will help avert the irritation and help in drying up the hives, particularly if there are emission on the blisters. Layers of sanitized piece of cloth that is immersed in cold water or Burrow’s solution can help relieve the irritation due to dermatitis. For an optimum outcome, put the compress on the distressed parts for about 10-15 minutes each hour. Aside from hot or cold compress, you can also try whole-milk compress. The protein established in milk can really help alleviate irritation.

Tip #3:  Calamine Lotion.

This is considered as an ancient reserve that can aid in alleviating the irritation efficiently. You can put on this lotion on the distressed parts at least 2 or three times daily. An alternative is the use of hydrocortisone cream. If you are experiencing allergic dermatitis, hydrocortisone cream will help relieve the itchiness due to the condition.

Tip #4:  Oral antihistamine.

Taking in antihistamine by mouth can alleviate the irritation caused by dermatitis, but this type of treatment can result to drowsiness that is why extra care is required when taking it. It is better if you will take it in before bedtime so that you can rest the whole night and you will not sense the itchiness caused by the condition. Do not take antihistamine if you are going to drive to avoid accident.

Tip #5:  Try some forms of complementary treatments.

If you are experiencing irritation due to dermatitis, you can put a small amount of the colloidal oatmeal bath treatment or 1 cup of baking soda in a tub with lukewarm water. It can help relieve itchiness.

Tip #6:  Avoid scratching your skin.

Do not scratch your skin if it is extremely itchy because you will just aggravate the condition. Scratching will cause fissures on your skin and will allow an infection to get through the inside layer of your skin.

On top of all these recommended tips on how to treat dermatitis, remember to always consult your doctor. If your condition will not improve through the skin care tips mentioned above, try to see a doctor for proper evaluation and diagnosis of the problem. He is the only one who can give you the best advice on how to treat the skin problem you are experiencing.
